Currently, there are numerous forms of funding support available for fishermen's safety training, including:

Refresher Safety Training

This can be undertaken by experienced fishermen who undertook their mandatory safety training more than three years ago. The courses cover sea survival, fire-fighting, first aid and safety awareness, and fishermen can now attend these courses free of charge. Please contact your local Approved Training Provider or Call Seafish Training on 01472 252302 or e-mail for further information.

New Entrant Training

To encourage new recruits into the fishing industry, we are funding a three week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course throughout the UK. The course will train new entrants, free of charge, to a higher level than the minimum legal requirements. We have received funding from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency(MCA). We are currently able to fund the delivery of courses in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales  until at least 31st March  2018 Call Seafish Training on 01472 252302 or e-mail for further information.

Under 16.5m Skipper's Certificate

Funding is now available from Seafish for Bridge watch keeping, Engine room watch keeping, Intermediate Stability Awareness and GMDSS Short Range Certificates. Additional funding is also available for fishermen who already hold the Seafish Under 16.5m Skipper's Certificate to undertake advanced engineering and radar courses. Call Seafish Training on 01472 252302 or e-mail for further information.

Certificates of Competency

Seafish are still able to continue offering grant support  for experienced fishermen undertaking MCA (Fishing Vessel) Deck and Engineer Officer Certificates of Competency. Call Seafish Training on 01472 252302 or email for further information and an application form.

Other short courses:

In addition to the above, there are a host of other short courses that we can fund. If you are an experienced commercial fisherman, now is the time to take advantage of this funding to develop your skills and knowledge for the future. If there is a course you would like to undertake, get in touch and we’ll try to help. For example, have you ever wanted to gain a higher level GMDSS radio operator certificate? Undertake an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Approved Engineering Course (AEC) or Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM) course? These courses can open up other income earning opportunities for you and help you develop your career as a professional seafarer.
